Bringing people closer: How the Government of Cantabria has designed its mobile apps
GIS technology to centralise all the Government of Cantabria’s information and make it available to all citizens

The design of these applications, developed by Vexiza, is based on a key principle: that anyone can use Mapas Cantabria comfortably, clearly and from any mobile device (Android and iOS) or via the web version. To achieve this, work has been done on a technological structure that keeps geographical information organised and accessible from a single location. This allows the maps to be constantly updated and enables the administration to create new tools or visualisations without the need for complex processes.
How innovation can connect people with their environment
The Cantabria Maps apps incorporate several features designed to make exploring the region easy and useful. The new 3D viewer allows you to understand the relief and shapes of the territory at a glance. The creation of routes and their GPX or KML export is ideal for hikers, cyclists or anyone who wants to plan a route. The coordinate search helps locate specific points, while downloading maps for offline use is especially practical in rural or mountainous areas. In addition, the catalogue of available information is very extensive: it includes data on coastlines and beaches, cadastral information, mobility elements such as cycle paths, and also heritage and cultural content, including churches, historic sites and unique buildings, among others.
Overall, this project has become an example of how a public administration can bring its territory closer to citizens through simple and accessible digital tools. The Mapas Cantabria app allows users to explore and discover the environment better, fostering a closer, more informed and connected relationship with the geographical reality of the region.
